2M NATURAL (5+ Cards – Prefer 6 Cards)
OVER 2NoTrump OPEN Equal (-2) – Favorable (-3) SAME as ABOVE
OVER BIG 1C & 2C OPEN Equal (-2) – Favorable (-3)
X Transfer to D -OR- MAJOR 2-Suiter
H Over D MAJOR 2-Suiter
D Transfer to H
H Transfer to S
S “UNUSUAL” minor 2-Suiter
NT Transfer to C -OR- Major / minor 2-Suiter
D Over C (D + UnDisclosed MAJOR)
M Over C (C + Bid MAJOR)
This concept extends the principle of 'simple transfer overcalls' for more complete information. 'Transfer Overcalls' of Notrump are not new - but can benefit from further development. Over STRONG NT, we 'give-up' strength-showing X's. We retain penalty doubles (WITH TRICKS) over LITE NT.
"MOCAN" is equally satisfactory over Big or Lite Notrump - and in immediate seat as well as balance seat. With favorable vulnerability or a good 2-suiter, "MOCAN" may also be used safely over strong 2NT Opening Bid. "MOCAN" will describe all Single-Suited Hands as well as all 2-Suited Hands.
You may also want to evaluate using "MOCAN" after your partnership opens 1Suit and Opponent overcalls 1NT (either standard -or- 12-14 HC).
"NEW" SUPPORT X -OR- XX (10.16.2005)
"Support X-or-XX" operates in a sequence of 1minor (Open) - 1MAJOR response - intereference by RHO. Standard procedure is to raise immediately over interference by RHO with 4 Trumps and by agreement X-or-XX with only 3 Trumps. The raise to show 4 Trumps is sound (and has the safety of 'Law-of-Total-Tricks' = 8 combined Trumps). The choice to use X-or-XX to announce only 3 Trumps may be RISKY - if responder has a skimpy first response. Here are my suggestions for Opener.
- Pass (1-Level) = 3 Trumps
- 1NT (IF 12-14 HC) = Less Than 3 Trumps
- 1NT (IF 15-17 HC) = Less Than 4 Trumps
- 2NT (Partnership Agreed HC for 2NT) = Less Than 4 Trumps
- Raise to 2-Level = 4 Trumps with minimum HC
- X-or-XX = 4 Trumps with 15-17 HC (NT pattern not required)
- Raise to 3-Level = 4 Trumps with 18-19 HC
- Raise to 4-Level = 4 Trumps and "Super Hand"
COMMENT: This approach has no need to 'announce' 3 Trumps above the 1-Level. Not really a problem. If Opener has 3 Trumps with minimum - responder needs sound values to compete in the auction.
